Fraudsters have begun to imitate the voices of relatives and friends of Russians more often – Kommersant

Fraudsters began to fake the votes of relatives and friends of Russians in order to lure money from them, the press service of the Bank of Russia reported. According to the regulator, recently in the Russian Federation there has been a surge in cases of fraud involving voice forgery.

“To force a person to provide the necessary information or make a money transfer, attackers can contact a person on behalf of acquaintances, relatives or colleagues, imitating their voices using special programs,” they said “RIA News” in the press service of the Central Bank.

As noted by the Bank of Russia, criminals actively use combined fraud schemes, mainly telephone. At the same time, they are increasingly creating address schemes based on a person’s digital portrait. Attackers can create it, for example, based on information that the citizen himself posts on open Internet resources. The Central Bank advised people to be extremely careful when posting personal and financial information on social networks and other open resources.

Earlier in the Central Bank reportedthat when communicating with Russians, scammers most often introduce themselves as employees of law enforcement agencies or the Bank of Russia, and also send fake IDs to citizens.

In December 2023, it became known that the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, together with Roskomnadzor, was preparing an initiative to revoke licenses from telecom operators that miss fraudulent calls. We are talking about amendments to the Law “On Communications”. However, the Ministry of Digital Development of Russia, which is also responsible for combating telephone fraud, has not yet taken part in the work on the initiative, and operators have expressed concerns about the opacity of such reviews.
