FP: The US insists on expanding the embassy in Kyiv and freedom of movement for diplomats

The United States State Department plans to increase the staff of the embassy in Kyiv and give employees more freedom of movement. Foreign Policy magazine writes about this, citing its sources.

The publication’s interlocutors clarified that the embassy may have about 30-40 employees. Their tasks will include monitoring the financial and military assistance allocated by the US to Ukraine.

In addition, the State Department insists on the abolition of restrictions on movement within Ukraine. Currently, embassy employees are limited to traveling within the city limits of Kyiv. It is expected that they will soon be able to travel around the Kyiv region right up to the border with Belarus without permission from the White House.

According to the author of the article, the decision to increase the number of personnel may be made despite the fact that this may increase the risk of drawing the United States into the conflict.

According to Foreign Policy interlocutors, the diplomatic mission now employs from 100 to 200 people. The exact number is not known for security reasons. However, it is emphasized that it has increased significantly compared to the summer of 2023. Moreover, the maximum number of employees – more than 800 – was even before the conflict with Ukraine.
