In the first round of the National Hockey League (NHL) Draft, which took place in Nashville on June 28-29, four Russian hockey players were selected. The Arizona Coyotes selected defender Dmitry Simashev (6th) and forward Daniil But (12th), Philadelphia – forward Matvey Michkov (7th), Colorado – defenseman Mikhail Gulyaev (31st).
The NHL Draft is an annual event held in the NHL, which consists in the transfer of the rights to young hockey players who meet certain selection criteria to professional clubs in the League. The NHL Draft is held once a year, two to three weeks after the end of the previous season.
As clarifies Sport24, 18-year-old Dmitry Simashev became the first selected Russian in the last NHL draft. However, experts assumed that the striker of the St. Petersburg SKA and the Russian national team Matvey Michkov, who is also 18 years old, will be the first to be chosen. In the end, he came in second.
Two Russians were in the top 10 draft for the first time since 2018. Then “Carolina” took striker Andrey Svechnikov under the general 2nd number, and “Rangers” – striker Vitaly Kravtsov (under 9th). The result, when four Russians were selected in the first round of the draft, was recorded for the third time in the past six years, the newspaper notes.
