Formula 1 drivers banned from making political statements

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has banned Formula 1 pilots and drivers of other series from making political statements under the auspices of the organization. This must be authorized by the governing body, as defined in the updated document of the International Sporting Code.
The organization thus issued a ban on the “general display of political, religious and personal statements or comments that violate the principle of neutrality promoted by the FIA”. Breaking the rules will result in punishment. However, political statements that are approved within the jurisdiction of the organization may be made by riders of all series.
Previously, the FIA banned riders from unbuttoning their overalls during award ceremonies. This comes after multiple Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton showed up at the start of the 2020 Tuscany Grand Prix in a T-shirt that read “Arrest the cops who killed Breonna Taylor” and walked out to the podium after the race. This season German Sebastian Vettel wore a helmet with slogans that Canada is committing climate crimes.
