Formula 1 cancels 2023 Chinese Grand Prix due to coronavirus

The Formula 1 World Championship Grand Prix in China will not take place due to ongoing COVID-19 related difficulties. The official website states that the leadership of the championship is currently considering options for alternative venues.

“After dialogue with the promoter and the relevant authorities, we can confirm that the 2023 Chinese Grand Prix will not take place due to the ongoing difficulties related to the coronavirus situation,” the statement said.

Over the past month, the epidemiological situation in China has begun to worsen. According to China Beige Book International, 53% of companies in China reported having at least one employee with COVID-19 in November. In the country passed mass protests against the severe anti-COVID restrictions imposed by the authorities.

The Chinese Grand Prix was last held in 2019. In 2020 and 2021, the stage was postponed and then cancelled. In 2023, the race was scheduled to take place from 14 to 16 April at the Shanghai circuit.
