Former USSR Prime Minister Nikolai Ryzhkov was buried in Moscow – Kommersant

Nikolai Ryzhkov, who headed the USSR government in 1985–1991, was buried at the Troekurovskoye cemetery. The politician’s funeral took place in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov, First Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Alexander Zhukov, head of the United Russia faction in the State Duma Vladimir Vasiliev, founder of Yabloko Grigory Yavlinsky, leader of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation Gennady Zyuganov and other government officials came to say goodbye to Mr. Ryzhkov figures. Press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin treated Nikolai Ryzhkov with respect and “always paid tribute to the great role that this statesman played in the modern history of our state.”

Nikolai Ryzhkov died on February 28, 2024, he was 94 years old. In the 1980s, Nikolai Ryzhkov served as Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the USSR, was a member of the Politburo of the CPSU Central Committee, and supported Mikhail Gorbachev’s course towards creating “market socialism” while maintaining planned economic management. He headed the headquarters for liquidation of the consequences of the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, coordinated the work to liquidate the earthquake in the city of Spitak. For his contribution to the organization of restoration work in the Armenian Spitak, a monument was erected to Mr. Ryzhkov.

During his public service, Mr. Ryzhkov was awarded two Orders of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, received the title of Hero of Labor of Russia and received several other awards.
