Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who fled the crisis-hit island nation last month amid massive protests, is expected to return to the country next week, according to a senior minister.
Foreign Minister Ali Sabri said CNN late on Wednesday evening that the government of Sri Lanka was informed of the return of Rajapaksa “through diplomatic channels”.
“Officially, we are not involved in the return. He is a citizen of Sri Lanka and can travel as he wishes,” Sabri said.
Rajapaksa’s cousin, former Sri Lankan ambassador to Russia, Udayanga Weeratunga, told reporters on Wednesday that the former leader would return on August 24.
Rajapaksa is in Thailand after fleeing Sri Lanka on a military plane to the Maldives in July before heading to Singapore, days after angry protesters stormed his official residence and office.
He resigned from Singapore as public outrage grew over his alleged mismanagement of the economy.
