A blonde with delicate features ravaged by sadness bends over the body of her late husband. Her tears dried, she notices an embarrassing detail: a few hours before his funeral, the man displays a vigorous erection. Here we are from the first minutes warned: this man, nicknamed “The Prick” (“the bastard”, to remain polite) by his sisters-in-law, will sweat to the end. And especially, Bad Sisters is not there to make us cry.
Hardly surprising from Sharon Horgan, whose sassy humor has been her trademark since Pulling or, more recently, Disaster. This remake of the Flemish series Clanadapted for Apple TV+, comes in the form of a murder mystery tinged with comedy, located on a stretch of Irish coast near Dublin.
The five Garvey sisters have been inseparable since the untimely death of their parents. Only the eldest, Eva (Sharon Horgan), and the youngest, Becka (Eve Hewson), sometimes look for lice, embarrassed by the almost maternal bond that unites them. But it is especially the case of Grace which poses a problem. Bigoted and submissive, this housewife suffers daily from the tyranny of her husband, John Paul (known as “Prick”), a misogynistic, manipulative and contemptuous senior executive, all the more dangerous because he is persuaded to be on the side of of good and of God. In this Ireland steeped in Catholic values, the detail is important. An intimate fact, revealed much later in the season, will shed light on the neuroses of this character with a shady pedigree, the son of a taxidermist and a slightly crazy lady, with whom Becka maintains an incongruous friendship.
A fine handwriting
The death of John Paul, in apparently accidental circumstances, does not relieve the Garvey sisters: Eva, Ursula (Eva Birthistle), Bibi (Sarah Greene) and Becka probably have something to reproach themselves for. Faced with questions from Thomas and Matthew, two not very talented insurers who must pay Grace the policy triggered by the death of her husband (we learn later that they have every interest in not doing so), the four sisters panic.
The truth will unfold at the end of ten episodes during which the venomous relationships maintained by John Paul with his wife and his sisters-in-law are unraveled, all of whom seem to have a good reason to kill him. We can see quite quickly the direction in which the story takes us, the series manages its suspense admirably, on the one hand thanks to a perfect balance between investigation and comedy, on the other hand thanks to an equally jubilant imbalance between the characters. feminine and masculine. Lover, husband, boss… the men here are abused to the point of caricature by the screenwriters. It’s sometimes too much (John Paul’s appearances become more and more painful over the episodes), and fortunately some will end up honoring their selves, but that’s also what makes Bad Sisters an interesting parable about the difficulty of ending patriarchy.
Facing them, the five sisters shine, embodied with accuracy and humor by faces not very well known apart from that of Sharon Horgan, but which deserve to be discovered beyond the Irish borders. In addition to a fine and patient writing, which gives each character time to exist, the series benefits from an airy production (100% feminine), which makes the beaches and forests of Ireland a perfect setting for this story of emancipation and redemption.
