Matthew Booth, a former South African football player, spoke about his surprise at the drinking culture in Russia, transmits Sport24. According to Booth, on the first day after joining the Rostov football club, he walked into a grocery store and discovered that almost half the shelves were occupied by alcoholic beverages. Then, according to him, he realized “that thanks to vodka and beer, Russia is a country with a huge drinking culture.”
Booth noted that, in his opinion, drinking culture in Russia is at the same high level as in England. He also admitted that it took him a while to learn to drink like his teammates.
Booth played in Russian football for the Rostov and Krylya Sovetov clubs. He played in Rostov from 2002 to 2004, and then continued his career in Krylya Sovetov from 2004 to 2008.
Earlier, Serbian midfielder of CSKA Moscow Sasha Zdelar said that he was surprised by the cleanliness of Russian cities. Moscow, in his words, is “simply an incredible, magnificent metropolis,” which surprises the athlete with “how well everything is organized here.”
