Detained in January, the ex-presidential candidate was punished for participating in three street rallies in 2020

The Moscow court in Minsk sentenced Andrei Dmitriev, a candidate for the presidency of Belarus in the 2020 elections, to a punishment of one and a half years in prison. At the same time, according to the decision, the arrest previously imposed on the property of the defendant was canceled. In court, Dmitriev stated that he fully admits his guilt.

“To be found guilty of active participation in group actions that grossly violate public order and are associated with a clear disobedience to the lawful demands of government officials that have caused a disruption in the operation of transport, in the absence of signs of a more serious crime,” the court verdict says.

Formulating the guilt of ex-rival Alyaksandr Lukashenka, the prosecutor told the court that the defendant took part in three unauthorized opposition rallies in the center of Minsk in August-September 2020.

According to official data, 1.21% of voters supported Dmitriev in the elections in 2020.
