Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan, who is accused of misappropriating funds from the Al-Qadeer Trust family foundation, has been released on bail. About it informs local TV channel Dawn.
The decision to release Khan on bail for two weeks was taken by the High Court of Islamabad.
The day before, May 11, Khan’s arrest was declared illegal by the country’s Supreme Court. Chief Justice Oumar Ata Bandial criticized the “character of the arrest” of the ex-premier. The Supreme Court transferred Khan to its jurisdiction, that is, he was formally arrested by the court, and not by economic intelligence – the anti-corruption police agency.
The former prime minister of Pakistan was accused of misappropriating funds from the Al Qadeer Trust, a family foundation that funded the creation of Al Qadeer University. According to investigators, Khan and his wife embezzled 50 billion Pakistani rupees (about $175 million). In addition, Khan was accused of selling expensive gifts received from foreign delegations, with the subsequent embezzlement of 36 million Pakistani rupees ($127,700). The ex-premier himself denies all accusations and calls them politically motivated.
After Khan’s arrest, mass protests broke out in the country. By the morning of May 11, 2,000 people had been arrested and five had been killed. To suppress the unrest, the government sent troops to the capital Islamabad.
