Former military man and ex-premier entered the second round of the presidential elections in the Czech Republic

Former NATO Military Committee Chairman Petr Pavel and former Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš advanced to the second round of the presidential elections, reported Czech TV.
After counting 100% of the votes, Pavel received 35.4%, Babish – 34.99%. The publication clarifies that the advantage was approximately 22,000 votes.
The Czech economist, former rector of the Mendel University in Brno Danusha Nerudova, who took third place, after counting 99.99%, won about 13.92% of the vote, Senator Pavel Fischer – about 6.75%, diplomat Jaroslav Bašta – about 4.45%.
The voter turnout was 68.24%. The second round of elections will be held on January 27 and 28.
Director of the Progressive Policy Foundation Oleg Bondarenko told Vedomosti in December 2022 that the Russian factor plays and will continue to play an important role in a number of election campaigns in 2023, including in the presidential elections in the Czech Republic.
It is highly likely that Andrei Babish will become the new leader of the country in January. “I can’t call him a friend of Russia, but I wouldn’t consider him some kind of tough Russophobe either. He is a businessman, he was already the prime minister of the Czech Republic,” he said.
