Ankara is not ready to approve the admission of Sweden to NATO

Advisor to the Turkish President Ibrahim Kalin said that Turkey is not in a position to ratify Sweden’s entry into NATO. The words of Erdogan’s adviser are quoted by the newspaper Le Figaro.
The official believes that the draft law will be rejected by parliamentarians.
The Associated Press, meanwhile, notes that, according to the same Kalin, Turkey has no fundamental objections to the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO. But for this, as indicated in the information, the two countries have yet to fulfill a number of Ankara’s conditions. “In general, we would like to see them in NATO,” the agency quoted Kalyn as saying.
Stockholm and Helsinki, according to the adviser, have warned Ankara that it will take time. Both states intend to pass laws only by June, allowing, in particular, to even more strictly monitor the activities of Kurdish organizations in their countries.
Kalin also added that the pace of Turkey’s ratification of Sweden’s and Finland’s accession to NATO could be affected by presidential elections. So far, they are scheduled for June 18, but it is possible that they will be held in May. Before the elections, the country’s parliament, according to the law, is dissolved. Consequently, for some time, the Turkish deputies will not be able to technically consider the issue of NATO expansion.
