Former head of Karelian IK-9 and his subordinate sentenced to seven years for violence

The Petrozavodsk city court found guilty the ex-head of correctional colony No. 9 (IK-9) in Petrozavodsk, Ivan Savelyev, as well as his ex-deputy Ivan Kovalev, in excess of official powers in a criminal case of beating a prisoner, the men were sentenced to seven years in a penal colony. This is reported by a correspondent from the courtroom.
As noted, both defendants, by court decision, were also banned from holding positions in the state and municipal service for three years. The men were taken into custody right in the courtroom. The day before, during the court debate, the state prosecutor asked Savelyev and Kovalyov to be sentenced to 8.5 years in prison each.
Recall that the leaders of IK-9 were detained in 2020 as a result of the publication on the Internet of a video that was recorded in 2014. The workers of the colony were charged under the article on abuse of power with the use of violence against the convict. As it became known, Kovalev and Savelyev inflicted 17 punches and kicks on the head and torso of the convict.
