Former deputy prime minister of the regional government and former regional ombudsman Larisa Opanasyuk has died in Crimea. RIA Novosti reports this with reference to sources.
“She died tonight,” the source said. “The cause was a serious illness.”
It is reported that the funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, the ceremony will take place in the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Simferopol.
After Crimea became part of the Russian Federation, Opanasyuk worked in the regional government as Deputy Prime Minister, and also as head of the apparatus of the Council of Ministers. Since 2019, she has served as Commissioner for Human Rights in Crimea. She retired in May 2023.
Opanasyuk’s daughters are famous singers in Ukraine, performing as part of the duet “Anna – Maria” since the 2000s. In 2013, the twin sisters performed on the Maidan in Kyiv, but subsequently remained to live outside the Crimea. In interviews, local media often asked artists “whose Crimea is,” but Anna and Maria Opanasyuk answered that they had made their choice, but could not erase their parents living on the peninsula from their lives.
