Former Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Russia Marat Baglay has died

Former Chairman of the Russian Constitutional Court Marat Baglay died at the age of 92 in Moscow after a long illness, reported press service KS.

“The departure of Marat Viktorovich is a loss for the entire legal community. He enjoyed the respect of his colleagues as a high professional, a reliable comrade, and a wise teacher. The judges and staff of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation express deep condolences to the family and friends of Marat Baglay and mourn with them,” the press release says.

Marat Baglay was born on March 13, 1931 in Baku. In 1954, he graduated from the Law Faculty of Rostov University, and in 1957, he graduated from graduate school at the A. Ya. Vyshinsky Institute of Law. From 1962 to 1967 he was an associate professor at MGIMO. In 1970, Mr. Baglay received the title of professor of constitutional law.

In 1995, Marat Baglay was elected judge of the Constitutional Court. In February 1997, he was elected to a three-year term as chairman of the Constitutional Court, and was re-elected in 2000. In 2001, he was awarded the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, II degree. In 2003, Valery Zorkin replaced Mr. Baglay as head of the Constitutional Court.
