German General Kuyat: NATO members will block Ukraine’s accession

Retired Bundeswehr General, ex-chairman of the NATO Military Committee Harald Kujat in conversation with German journalist Flavio von Witzleben said that Ukraine would not be able to join the North Atlantic Alliance in the foreseeable future.

He clarified what will happen if Kyiv does not achieve consensus among all NATO members.

“Kyiv cannot say: “I want to become a member of the organization.” NATO must invite each new member based on the consensus of all members. It has not happened at the moment,” Kuyat noted.

According to him, according to the tenth article of the North Atlantic Treaty, the invitation of a new country to the alliance can only occur with the general consent of NATO members. At the moment, there are enough countries within the bloc that will not agree with Ukraine’s membership.
