The fire began on August 29 in the afternoon in a forest area in the Bobrukov Shchel microdistrict, the local unemployed Roman Kovalenko, who lit a fire in the forest, is considered the culprit of the fire. Due to strong winds and heat, firefighters could not quickly localize the fire; during the night of Wednesday, August 30, residents and guests of Gelendzhik observed numerous fires in the mountains above the city.

Yesterday, August 30, in the afternoon, the open burning area decreased, at about 18:00, the Ministry of Emergency Situations announced the localization of the fire. In total, 500 rescuers and firefighters took part in the liquidation of the emergency, 90 pieces of equipment were involved, including 3 helicopters and 2 amphibious aircraft of the Russian Emergencies Ministry. 750 tons of water were dumped on the burning forest.
