The expulsion of Russian diplomats will have consequences for Russian-Moldovan relations. First of all, this will affect the residents of both countries, whose opportunities to receive timely consular assistance, as well as to maintain business and cultural ties will be significantly reduced. About it stated Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that the staff of the Russian Embassy in a reduced staff would not be able to provide the necessary volumes and terms of consular services. It will also have to limit the work of the Trade Representation and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Chisinau.
“Responsibility for this lies entirely with the Moldovan leadership, which, as part of the large-scale anti-Russian campaign unleashed by it, made an unjustified decision to significantly reduce the number of personnel of Russian foreign missions in Moldova,” the ministry added.
Part of the employees of Russian foreign missions in Moldova and members of their families left Moldova on August 14.
On July 26, Chisinau decided to reduce the number of staff of the Russian embassy in the republic and announced the expulsion of 45 people. On August 2, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of Moldova Nicolae Popescu declaredthat the decision of Moldova to reduce the number of staff of the Russian embassy in the republic is a response to Moscow’s policy. Popescu added that the republic had established that some of the employees of the Russian diplomatic mission were allegedly engaged in “destabilizing the situation” in the country.
The Kremlin said that Chisinau deliberately brings relations with Russia “in a very miserable state” and the country’s leadership “cuts all the ropes.” Russian Ambassador in Chisinau Oleg Vasnetsov explainedthat the decision of Moldova to reduce the staff of the Russian embassy will complicate cooperation with Russia in the cultural, humanitarian, business and public spheres, and will also create problems for the citizens of the republic
