The likelihood of a military conflict initiated by Georgia against Abkhazia is “rather high.” This statement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia Inal Ardzinba.
“Possibility of military conflict [со стороны Грузии] is assessed as quite high,” said the head of the Abkhaz Foreign Ministry during a meeting of the public council (quote according to TASS).
He pointed to recent sentence leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party Irakli Kobakhidze to hold a referendum on opening a second front. Kobakhidze later clarified that his statement was sarcasm. He stressed that the population of the country opposes the military conflict.
Ardzinba was skeptical about the refutation. According to him, the volume of deliveries of military equipment to Georgia is growing, and joint exercises with NATO are also regularly held in the country. “Probably, they don’t prepare for peace this way, most likely they prepare for war,” the minister added.
Secretary of the Security Council of Abkhazia Sergei Shamba confirmed the validity of the fears. According to him, the republic “should be ready for anything.” At the same time, he called Russia the main ally of Abkhazia. Shamba specified that the same countries that currently support Ukraine will act on the side of Georgia.
Despite the declaration of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the 1990s, Georgia still considers them to be its territories. In 2008, Russia recognized the independence of the republics. Also, the independence of states is recognized by Venezuela, Syria, Nicaragua and Nauru.
