Foreign agent journalist Garmazhapova was convicted in absentia in the case of fakes in Buryatia

The Sovetsky District Court of Ulan-Ude passed a sentence in absentia to a woman found guilty of committing a crime under Part 2 of Art. 207.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (public dissemination of knowingly false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation). How clarified Regional Investigative Committee, by a court decision the woman was sentenced to seven years in prison to be served in a general regime colony with deprivation of the right to engage in activities related to the administration of Internet resources for a period of three years. The name of the convicted person is not officially announced; Kommersant’s source in the court notes that we are talking about Alexandra Garmazhapova (recognized as a foreign agent) – a Buryat journalist who specializes in human rights activities.
“The investigation and the court established that in the summer of 2022, the woman gave an interview to journalists of one of the public channels on the Internet, in which, under the guise of reliable information, she provided deliberately false information regarding the conduct of a special military operation and the actions of the Russian Armed Forces on the territory of Ukraine. After that, she published a video recording of this interview on her foundation’s channel on one of the video hosting sites for viewing by an unlimited number of people,” the ICR department said.
It is also noted that the punishment against Garmazhapova will be carried out after her detention or “voluntary return to the territory of the Russian Federation.” Currently, the woman is “put on the interstate wanted list.”
Earlier it was reported that journalist and co-founder of the Free Buryatia Foundation (the organization’s activities are recognized as undesirable in the Russian Federation) Alexandra Garmazhapova was put on the wanted list in February of this year.
On July 13, 2022, Roskomnadzor blocked the website of Free Buryatia. On November 25 of the same year, the Ministry of Justice added Alexandra Garmazhapova to the register of foreign agents. The journalist worked, in particular, as a correspondent for the St. Petersburg Novaya Gazeta, and also collaborated with The New Times and Echo of Moscow in St. Petersburg. In 2016, she left Russia.
