Foreign Affairs: Moscow wins “sanctions war” with Washington

As informs Foreign Affairs, director of global forecasting at the Economist Intelligence Unit, Agatha Desmarais, said that Russia and China are successfully resisting the US’s favorite weapon – political and economic sanctions.
In her opinion, restrictions have long been the favored diplomatic weapon of the United States.
“It makes sense that sanctions are a popular tool for US policymakers. They fill the void between empty diplomatic declarations and deadly military interventions. However, the golden days of US sanctions may soon be over,” Desmarais said.
As an argument, the expert cites the creation by Russia and China of bilateral currency swaps, which made it possible not to use the dollar in settlements.
Non-Western payment systems have also been developed, similar to the Chinese alternative to SWIFT CIPS, and digital currency is being gradually introduced. Desmarais noted that the US cannot restrict the use of virtual money issued by the central bank of another country.
