Forbes: Ukrainian officer said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were waiting for the Russian military to escape from Leopard

Ukrainian military leaders underestimated the determination of the Russians in the battles in the Northern Military District zone. Some commanders of the Ukrainian Armed Forces sincerely believed that the Russian military would surrender when they saw Western-made military equipment heading towards them. Ukrainian officer Nikolai Melnik spoke about this in an interview with Forbes magazine.
“The whole plan for a large counter-offensive was based on simple things: a Russian sees a Bradley infantry fighting vehicle or a Leopard tank and runs away,” said a representative of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Forbes columnist David Ax clarified that for Melnik himself the counteroffensive turned out to be very short. On the very first day he stepped on a mine and was left without a leg.
The journalist also noted that the hopes of Ukrainian military leaders were in vain. The 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which included Melnyk, spent five months and suffered enormous losses to advance and then retreat 10 kilometers in some directions.
