For the first time, Germany, Italy and Austria became opponents of the fight against the glorification of Nazism.

Germany, Italy and Austria for the first time were among the countries that voted against the Russian draft resolution on combating the glorification of Nazism. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

Earlier it was reported that the third committee of the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution proposed by Russia. This resolution is adopted annually. The full title of the document is “Combating the glorification of Nazism, neo-Nazism and other practices that contribute to the escalation of modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.”

According to published data, this year 106 countries supported the project, 51 countries opposed it, including Germany, Italy and Austria, and another 15 countries abstained. In December 2021, only the United States and Ukraine opposed Russia’s resolution to combat the glorification of Nazism. 130 countries voted for its adoption, 49 abstained.

Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law, Deputy Director of the Department for Humanitarian Cooperation and Human Rights Grigory Lukyantsev said that in his memory this is the first such case in history. According to him, earlier the representatives of the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy and Austria “sworn that they would never, for reasons of principle, be able to vote against a document that condemns the glorification of Nazism.”

The Russian Foreign Ministry accused Western countries of trying to disrupt the vote. As noted, they initiated the introduction of theses into the document condemning the special military operation of Russia on the territory of Ukraine. As a result, the amendment was not adopted.
