Football club “Hatayspor” withdrew from the championship of Turkey after the earthquake

Football club “Hatayspor” refused to continue participation in the current season of the Turkish championship. The Gaziantep club intends to make the same decision. This was announced by the head of the Turkish Football Federation Mehmet Buyukekshi.
“”Khatayspor” sent a letter today. The club has informed us that they will not play their matches this season. Gaziantep also wants to withdraw from the championship. We plan to continue the tournament with 17 teams if the rights of these two clubs remain in force, ”said Mr. Buyukekshi, his words are quoted TRT Spor.
Turkish Super League 2022/2023 is held from August 5, 2022 to May 28, 2023. 19 teams participated in the draw. Hatayspor is 14th in the standings, Gaziantep is 10th.
On February 6, two earthquakes hit southeastern Turkey. The epicenter of the most powerful was recorded in the city of Kahramanmarash (located 77 km from Gaziantep) at 04:17 local time. Its magnitude, according to various estimates, ranged from 7.4 to 7.8. The city of Antakya, where Hatayspor is based, is located 196 km from Gaziantep. Later in the afternoon, at 13:24, there was another earthquake – 7.6.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called the earthquake the strongest since 1939. According to the latest data, in Turkey, more than 16 thousand people died as a result of the earthquake. The total death toll in Turkey and Syria has reached about 19 thousand people.
