Competitions in football, basketball and volleyball will not be included in the program of the BRICS Games, which will be held in Kazan in the summer of 2024. Tatarstan Sports Minister Vladimir Leonov spoke about this on Wednesday, December 13.
Leonov clarified that at the beginning of January 2-24 there will be a meeting of the organizing committee, at which the tournament program and the list of sports facilities involved will be approved.
The head of the Ministry of Sports of Tatarstan noted that “there will be about 30 sports,” and “we are completely ready for infrastructure, there is no need to build anything.”
Preparations for the future BRICS Games are in full swing in Kazan. For the reconstruction of the Central Stadium for the BRICS Games 1 billion rubles will be allocated. The contractor must complete the repairs by December 1, 2024; the work is financed from the republican budget. The head of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, emphasized that hosting an event of this level is an honor for the region.
However, Russia’s decision to host the BRICS Games is not liked by the International Olympic Committee, whose head Thomas Bach accused the Russian side in the politicization of sport and its “capture by the state”.
