Food blogger Julie Powell, best known for ‘Julie & Julia’, dies at 49

Julie Powell, the food blogger best known for her food memoir Julie & Julia, which was made into a film with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams, has died at the age of 49.
Her husband Eric Powell confirmed to The New York Times that she died of cardiac arrest caused by cardiac arrhythmia at their home in Olivebridge in upstate New York on October 26.
Powell rose to prominence in 2002 when, approaching her 30th birthday, as “the secretary who lives with her husband, three cats and a python above a diner on a street in Long Island City.” She made it her mission to recreate in a year all 524 recipes from a copy of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1, a 1961 classic by Julia Child, television chef and elder of French cooking in the United States.
With no culinary background, Powell has documented her struggles in the kitchen in the popular, witty, and self-deprecating food blog Julie/Julia Project on Salon.com.
Amy Adams played Julie Powell and Meryl Streep played Julia Child in Nora Ephron’s 2009 film Julie & Julia: Cooking Happiness with a Recipe.
In 2005, Powell’s blog turned into a bestseller Julie & Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Kitchen in a Tiny Apartment; another paperback edition of hers was titled “My Year of Dangerous Cooking”.
Her memoir inspired the 2009 film. It was the last film written and directed by Nora Ephron, who died in 2012.
In 2009, Powell published her second book, Split: A Story of Marriage, Meat, and Obsession, which explored her relationship with her husband.
Powell is survived by her husband, brother and parents.
