After racist remarks made by some fans in a college volleyball game, the Duke Blue Devils announced on Saturday to move the location of their next meeting.
Duke University said its Saturday women’s volleyball game was moved to another venue in Provo, Utah, after a “troubling situation” during Friday’s game against BYU, adding that players should always be able to play in an inclusive and anti-racist environment.
Duke vice president and athletic director Nina King said in a press release that the welfare of the school’s female student-athletes was her top priority.
“Due to extremely unfortunate circumstances during Friday night’s game at BYU, we are forced to move today’s game against Rider to a different location to provide both teams with the safest atmosphere for competition”King said.
“We appreciate the support of BYU Athletic Administration as we navigate this troubling situation. I have been in touch with the student-athletes who have been deeply touched, I will continue to support them in any way I can and look forward to further discussions upon their return from Provo.”
The racial slurs and threats were directed at Duke sophomore Rachel Richardson who was allegedly repeatedly slurred as “nigger”.
BYU said on Saturday that it banned a Duke-identified fan and said that “the use of a racial slur in any of our sporting events is absolutely unacceptable”. BYU added that he apologized to Duke and the student-athletes “for what they have been through”.
