Folk signs: October 21, check your pockets

October 21 in the folk calendar – Tryphon and Pelageya. On this day, it was customary to tidy up winter clothes and shoes. Well, it’s not superfluous to do this today too – it’s getting colder outside, and frosts – not only at night, but also during the day – are just around the corner.
So, on Tryphon and Pelageya, our ancestors took out warm clothes and checked if everything was in order with her, if the moth had eaten it, if something needed to be mended or cleaned. The pockets were especially carefully examined to see if they were full of holes. It was believed that if you wear clothes with holes in your pockets, money will not stay in the household, as if falling into a bottomless hole.
If it is clear that no repair of clothes or shoes will bring them in order, on October 21 you can safely go to the store for new clothes. According to signs, everything bought on this day will go for the future and will be worn for a long time.
On Tryphon and Pelageya, you can’t harvest firewood and generally harm trees, even dry ones. It was believed that if you cut down trees on this day, break branches, peel off the bark, stick a knife or an ax into a tree trunk, then problems and troubles in life will arise literally from scratch. And according to another sign – the one who harms the tree will start to hurt, whine and break bones and joints.
As early as October 21, they tried not to start new business, especially with unfamiliar people – this threatened with problems and troubles. Trouble was also promised by a meeting with an unfamiliar person – the probability of being deceived that day was considered very high.
Folk signs on October 21 are as follows:
– if the clouds are low – frost will strike;
– if the stars seem dim – expect bad weather;
– if a bright circle is seen around the sun, the weather will be clear;
– if the owl screams – to a cold snap;
– if there are a lot of mushrooms in the forest, the snow will not fall soon.
