Folk omens: October 24 – do not count the crows

In the folk calendar, October 24 is Filippov’s rigmarole. The cantle in Russia was called the autumn thaw on the roads, which were carried by rains so that it was very difficult to drive.

On this day, women were engaged in needlework. But special attention was paid to the creation of various amulets for all family members. They also tried to put the house in perfect order – there was a belief that the one who would be dirty that day would live in debt the whole next year, and instead of money he would have only garbage in his wallet.

Various sharp objects – needles, scissors, knives and the like – were used with caution on October 24, since there was a high probability of being cut or injured so that the wound would heal for a very long time. From more modern beliefs on this matter: if you do a manicure or pedicure on this day, you can “cut off” your health with your nails.

Men, despite the mudslide, still had to leave the house – it was believed that this day was good for solving various important matters. And if you put them off until later, they can become impossible. There was another plus in the need to hit the road: our ancestors believed that inadvertently stepping into deep mud was for profit.

On Filippova, they tried to observe moderation in food – they believed. That overeating today threatens to starve in winter days. And they didn’t eat sweets at all that day – it was believed that otherwise one could later be seduced by the sweet speeches of some unkind person and suffer from this.

And on October 24, it was not advisable to go into the forest, especially alone – there was a high probability of meeting a wild beast or getting lost. They were also wary of looking at the crows that day, and if they suddenly raised their heads, hearing their croaking in the sky, they tried to quickly look away so as not to make problems and troubles.

Natural signs on October 24 are as follows:

– frost covered the ground in the morning – the day will be clear;

– morning snowfall – to a harsh winter;

– the snow fell and did not melt until the evening – to a good harvest next year;

– the snowfall dragged on for the whole day – to a frosty winter;

– the cat is stretched out or sleeping on its back – there will be warming, if curled up in a ball – it will get colder;

– a flock of birds flew overhead – good luck.
