Folk omens: October 17 – beware of Leshy

In the folk calendar, October 17 is Yerofeev’s day or Leshegon. Our ancestors believed that goblin was especially dangerous on this day, and they tried not to go into the forest.
It was believed that on this day, goblin in the forest can not only be seen, but also heard – they scream loudly, clap their hands and laugh in a terrible voice all day and all night. And the forest evil spirits can turn into anyone – a tree, a bird, an animal, an insect, and a person. The meeting with the goblin threatened with great misfortune. Therefore, on Yerofeev’s Day, the most daring man was sent to the forest: he took the goblin a gift – bread and salt – and left it on a stump. After that, the daredevil had to turn the insoles in his shoes from heel to toe and walk like that all day – they believed that this would bring good luck.
On October 17, women were not allowed to walk alone and talk to strangers, especially males. It was believed that this would help protect them from evil spirits and temptations.
Weddings were not played on Erofeev Day. There was a belief that those who get married on this day will have an unhappy marriage and one of the spouses may even die prematurely.
But on October 17, they were engaged in the manufacture of herbal tincture called “erofeich”. It included mint, anise, St. John’s wort, oregano, thyme, sweet clover, marjoram, yarrow and wormwood. Herbs were poured with vodka and insisted for 10-12 days in a warm and dark place. It was believed that this tincture improves appetite and helps with various diseases.
Natural signs on October 17 are as follows:
– if it rains, the winter will be cold;
– if the sky is clear, frosts will begin;
– if a cold wind blows, severe frosts cannot be avoided in winter;
– if in the morning the trees and grass are covered with frost – the next three days will be sunny;
– if the cat lies all day in the warmest place, it will soon snow.
Dreams that occur on the night of October 17 are rarely prophetic, but they may carry some kind of warning. On this night, unpleasant, restless dreams are often dreamed, and even if they are not remembered, a heavy residue may remain in the morning. If so, then you need to try to quickly switch to something pleasant.
