Folk omens March 9: a good day for fishing

March 9 in the folk calendar is Midsummer Day. Since that day, in Rus’, they have been especially attentive and careful to migratory birds, which begin to return from the south to their native lands.

On Midsummer Day, it was customary to install birdhouses and bird feeders near the house to help them find shelter and food. Today, it is good for gardeners and gardeners to “settle” birds next to their suburban housing – after all, birds help fight insect pests. In order not to frighten off future “neighbors”, they tried not to wash or hang clothes on the street that day.

It was considered a good omen to see a lark or a stork on this day. However, Muscovites are unlikely to have such luck – unless they travel to the southern regions of Russia.

Also, according to folk signs, today is a good day for fishing. It is believed that a good catch awaits fishermen on Ivanov’s day. That’s just to go out on the ice carefully: not everywhere its thickness is now sufficient to withstand a person.

Guests, as well as the poor and the needy, were treated to dishes from freshly caught fish – they believed that this would help attract prosperity to the house. But on this day, nothing was cooked from poultry meat, so as not to ward off good luck.

Going to bed on Midsummer’s Day is better after midnight. During the day, it’s not worth going to bed at all. It is believed that a sleeping person is threatened with illness during the day, and at night, evil spirits can penetrate into a house where there are no awake people and not only scare, but also arrange various troubles.

Among other folk signs of this day, there were the following: walking through snowdrifts – to trouble and confusion in work and household chores; braid braids – weave problems and troubles into them; ironing and steaming clothes – to trouble; cut trees and uproot stumps – unfortunately; burning fires – to family discord.

Folk signs on March 9 are as follows:

– if it starts to snow, it will be cold on Easter;

– if the day is warm – so will April;

– if the horns of the month are bright and steep – to frost;

– if the rooks returned from the south – in a month the snow will completely melt;

– if a warm wind blows, the summer will be warm, but rainy.
