Folk omens: January 5

January 5 in the folk calendar is the day of Fedul. On this day, special attention was paid to putting things in order in houses and taking care of domestic animals – the people believed that it would be possible to lure good spirits that would protect people and their household from various troubles.

The peasants on the eve of Christmas Eve put things in order in the stables, cowsheds and poultry houses, gave the animals special delicacies, fed and watered them more than usual. Milk on this day was first given to animals, and then they drank it themselves. It was believed that all this would protect living creatures from the effects of evil forces that could send diseases. City residents who have pets today can also follow folk traditions and surround their cat or dog, parrot or guinea pig, fish or chameleon with love and care …

On the day of Fedula, they traditionally baked lean cookies in the form of chickens, roosters, geese, ducks, turkeys, sheep, cows and cooked rye cakes. The cookies were wrapped in a clean towel and left until Christmas, and the cakes were fed to the animals.

They were finishing putting things in order in the house – there was a sign that if you finish cleaning before Christmas Eve, then peace and tranquility will reign in the house all year.

You should be more careful with sharp objects on this day – it is believed that cuts received on Fedul’s day will heal for a long time and hard.

You can’t repay debts – you owe again, you can’t fight – otherwise you will get seriously ill, you can’t talk about your dreams – they won’t come true, you can’t go unkempt, in old and dirty clothes – you will overcome ailments.

Folk signs on January 5 are as follows:

– what is the weather on this day, it will be like this in November;

If a blizzard blows, July will be rainy.

– if the snow falls quietly and evenly – to a good harvest.

Vivid dreams seen on the night of January 5-6 can come true within seven days.
