Folk calendar: November 8 – memorial day

November 8 in the folk calendar is Dmitriev’s Day. Like the previous Dmitrievskaya Saturday, this day was considered a memorial day. It was customary to go to the cemetery and arrange memorial meals at home.
Pancakes, kutya, pies and other dishes were prepared for the funeral table. The first pancake that the hostess baked was not to be eaten: it was intended for the souls of the dead. This pancake was placed on a plate intended for the deceased (it was placed on the memorial table), and the next morning they were fed to the birds.
On Dmitriev’s Day, it was not customary to engage in household chores (especially those related to water), repair work and needlework. But on this day they usually brewed beer, or rather, intoxicated kvass. Usually it was cooked enough to last until Christmas.
The following belief is also associated with this day: if the first guest who stepped over the threshold of the house is rich or prosperous, then the whole year will pass in abundance, and vice versa.
In addition, it was believed that all evil – done or said – would return three times. And if you laugh too much, have fun and have fun, you will soon have to cry a lot.
Unmarried girls on Dmitriev’s Day were afraid to stroke cats, otherwise the future husband would be walking. And the engaged girls who did not have time to get married before that day had to wait at least until Christmas. Although there was still a lot of time before Advent, it was believed that those who got married in the next two months would be unhappy in marriage.
Natural signs on November 8 are as follows:
– if it snows, spring will be cold;
– if the snow does not melt, spring will come late;
– if the windows are fogged up – wait for a cold snap;
– if a thaw comes after a frost, winter and spring will be warm;
– if the rivers are not yet covered with ice, there will be no frost until December itself;
