FIS changed its mind to allow Russian skiers to international competitions

If at the beginning of September the International Ski Federation (FIS) allowed the possibility of participation of Russian athletes in international competitions, then after the announcement of partial mobilization by Vladimir Putin, as well as the holding of referendums in the territories of Ukraine, the organization removed this issue from the agenda. About it “Match TV” said Elena Vyalbe, President of the Russian Ski Racing Federation.

“The return of Russian athletes to international competitions has become more difficult. Before mobilization and referendums, a neutral status was considered for our athletes, but now this is out of the question,” said Ms. Vyalbe.

Olympic champion in cross-country skiing Alexander Legkov added that it is too early to talk about the final decision of the FIS, since it will not be made until October 22. “Maybe even now the FIS wants to see us. The question is whether other countries will declare their non-participation if our guys are admitted. Most likely, the dialogue is taking place in this format,” he explained to RIA Novosti.

September 21, the day of the announcement of partial mobilization in Russia, FIS Secretary General Michel Vion informedthat Russian and Belarusian skiers are likely to be able to take part in international competitions, provided that the athletes compete under a neutral flag. September 16 with a similar assumption spoke Thomas Bach, head of the International Olympic Committee.
