A pioneering wildlife restoration project has an unexpected surprise: a bison cub. This is the first wild bison born in the UK in thousands of years.
In July, three buffaloes were released in Kent, but the rangers were unaware that one of them had a “mystery passenger” on board. Bison hide their pregnancy well so that predators do not attack pregnant animals or their offspring.
The female calf was discovered a couple of days later. The huntsmen lost his mother the day before, who found a secluded place for childbirth. “The calf has grown by leaps and bounds – literally,” said Tom Gibbs, bison keeper. She loves to run around adults, he added.
The project is a collaboration between the Kent Wildlife Trust and the Wildwood Trust. Its organizers hoped that the new herd would multiply over time, but did not expect it to happen so quickly. A bull is expected to arrive from Germany by the end of October and join the three female bison.
