Finland temporarily will close branch of its Consulate General in Petrozavodsk, according to the website of the country’s Foreign Ministry. In January, the branch of the Consulate General in Murmansk was closed.
“According to the assessment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Finland does not currently need an office in Petrozavodsk due to a significant reduction in the main tasks,” the report says.
At the same time, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the country allowed the resumption of the work of the department in the future. A branch in Petrozavodsk, opened in 1990, dealt with entry issues, bilateral relations and the development of regional and cross-border cooperation.
The Petrozavodsk and Murmansk branches worked under the Consulate General of Finland in St. Petersburg, which will continue its activities. For questions that used to be the Petrozavodsk office, you can now contact the Consulate General in St. Petersburg, they added.
In September 2022, Finland decided to restrict Russian citizens from entering the country and issuing visas to them. Also, Prime Minister Sanna Marin noted that the tightening of border crossing rules is associated with the announcement of partial mobilization in Russia. According to the prime minister, the Finnish authorities need to assess possible threats to national security.
