Finland will revoke the permit for the operation of the Russian Consulate General in Turku from October 1, 2023, reported on the website of the President of the Republic.
“The President of the Republic and the ministries determined that, as a countermeasure, Finland should revoke the permit for the operation of the Russian Consulate General in Turku from October 1, 2023. The Russian Ambassador was notified of this,” the statement said.
On July 6, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Russia recalls from October 1, consent to the activities of the Finnish Consulate General in St. Petersburg. The Finnish ambassador Antti Helanterya was summoned to the ministry, he was strongly protested in connection with the anti-Russian policy pursued by Helsinki. After this decision, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö informed on the preparation of retaliatory measures against Russia.
The Russian Foreign Ministry then pointed to the June decision of the Finnish side to expel nine people who worked in the Russian embassy in the country. In response, Russia decided to expel nine employees of the Finnish Embassy in Russia and the Finnish Consulate General in St. Petersburg. Finland previously explained its decision to expel Russian diplomats by the fact that they allegedly worked in intelligence.
