Finland does not want to disclose plans for the supply of tanks to Ukraine, said President Sauli Niinistö in a comment to ARD Tagesthemen.
“We don’t want our neighbor to read what we have and what we no longer have,” Niinistö said, referring to Russia.
After German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for more battle tanks to be delivered to Ukraine, the Finnish president reportedly declined to comment on his country’s position.
“Finland is the only non-NATO country with Leopard tanks that has a very long border with Russia. This means that our contribution cannot be very large in quantitative terms,” said Niinistö.
Earlier, the German authorities announced an agreement with several European countries on joint deliveries of 20-25 Leopard A1 tanks by the summer and more than 100 by the beginning of 2024. In total, Berlin expects to transfer to Kyiv 178 Leopard tanks of the first generation and 14 Leopard 2 type A6.
