The Finnish government will decide on the opening of checkpoints on the Finnish-Russian border no later than Wednesday, December 13. The Chairman of the Government of Finland, Petteri Orpo, spoke about this.
The politician emphasized that Helsinki is monitoring the dynamics of the refugee situation, and “the goal is to return to normal life.”
As Orpo said, in Finland “we are glad that everything is fine now, but the decision will be made in due time.”
Finnish authorities have closed the border with Russia under the pretext that Russian border guards are allegedly not fulfilling their duties to curb the flow of illegal migration. The checkpoints were closed until December 14, in order, as stated in Helsinki, to consider options for solving the migration problem. At the same time, in Finland it was not ruled out that extend border closure.
Moscow warned that the actions of official Helsinki would hit the residents of Finland itself. According to Finnish journalist Kosta Heiskanen, in the country there is not enough wood and fuel due to the closure of the border with Russia, and “people can’t go anywhere except to Estonia to get drunk.”
