On Monday, the city council of Turku in Finland unanimously decided to purchase the former Russian Consulate General building and build a new structure in its place.

According to the Yle portal, the city is going to buy the building from the current owner, Senate Properties, for 1.6 million euros. The land plot, whose area is 3.5 thousand square meters, includes the building of the Consulate General, which occupies 2 thousand square meters.

The city council also approved the decision to demolish the building, built in 1974, and build a new one in its place. There are plans to clean up the soil because the site was home to a foundry and galvanizing plant in the early 1900s.

The city council made a decision and decided not to wait for possible appeals, the portal notes.
