The number of working Russians under the age of 35 from December 2021 to December 2022 decreased by 1.33 million people, to 21.5 million, follows from the FinExpertiza study, based on Rosstat data. The last time such a large-scale decline in the number of employees under 35 was recorded following the results of the pandemic year 2020 – it amounted to 1.34 million people.

In a study whose materials are cited RBC, it is said that in December 2022 the number of young workers in the labor market reached 21.5 million people, which is 29.8% of all employed. The indicator reached the lowest values ​​for the entire period of statistics available since 2006. However, if we take into account the trend of population aging, which began to manifest itself in Russia since the 1990s, then we can assume that the indicator is a record low in the entire recent history of the country, FinExpertiza experts say.

The largest reduction for the year was recorded in the number of employees aged 25 to 29 years. They became less by 724 thousand (7.2 million people). Also, a significant “washout from the labor market” occurred in the age group of 30-34 years – a decrease by 524 thousand, to 10.7 million people. A decrease in the number of employees in 2022 was also noted among novice specialists aged 20–24 (-87 thousand, to 3.2 million people).

According to the results of last year, the number of working women under 35 years of age decreased by 8.5%, and men – by 3.5%. At the same time, in terms of gender and age, it must be taken into account that military personnel and mobilized are not excluded from the number of employees, although they fall out of the production process, FinExpertiza emphasized.

The authors of the study believe that the main reason for the aging of the workforce in Russia is related to demography, that is, the low birth rate in the 1990s. The number of young workers has been continuously decreasing since the early 2010s. Over the past ten years, the number of employees under 30 has decreased by 35.6%, or 5.9 million people.
