Ilya Malinin set a record and won the World Figure Skating Championship

US figure skater Ilya Malinin set a world record in the free skate and won the world championship.

In Montreal, based on the sum of two programs, Malinin scored 333.76 points (105.97 in the short program plus 227.79 in the free program). He performed 6 quadruple jumps in his free program, including a quadruple axel. The previous record for points scored in this program belonged to his compatriot Nathan Chen (224.92).

Japanese Yuma Kagiyama took silver (309.65), bronze went to France’s Adam Xiao Him Fa (284.39).

Malinin was born into the family of figure skaters Tatyana Malinina and Roman Skornyakov, who are natives of Russia. In the 1990s, they began representing Uzbekistan, and since 1998 they have been permanently residing in the United States.
