Russian figure skater Margarita Drobiazko and her partner Povilas Vanagas will not be allowed to participate in the 2024 European Championships in Kaunas, said the head of the Lithuanian Skating Federation Vytautas Jasutis. Ms. Drobyazko was stripped of her Lithuanian citizenship this week.
Mr Jasutis noted that “no one can deny the contribution” of the couple to the sport. “It’s a little disappointing that they won’t be able to come to the championship now. In other circumstances, this would probably be very useful,” he told the publication Respublika.lt.
Yesterday, September 15, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda signed a decree depriving Margarita Drobyazko of her citizenship. The reason was the figure skater’s participation in Tatiana Navka’s ice show “Swan Lake”. Mrs. Drobiazko received a Lithuanian passport as an exception for her services to Lithuanian sports and popularization of the country. Mrs. Drobyazko and her husband made the decision to represent Lithuania after the collapse of the USSR.
