Cameroon midfielder Gael Ondua will not be penalized for wearing boots with the image of the Russian flag in the 2022 World Cup match in Qatar against Switzerland. This was announced on Sunday by the press secretary of the International Football Federation (FIFA) Giovanni Marti, reports NRK.
Earlier in Norway, FIFA offered to punish Ondua for this act.
The 27-year-old football player came out in the 68th minute of the game and came on as a substitute in boots with the image of the Russian flag on them.
“The FIFA Disciplinary Commission knows about Ondua’s boots,” Marty said.
At the same time, a FIFA spokesman said that there were “no problems” in this. He explained that “Gael is from Cameroon and Russia, and this is just the flag of his country.” Marty clarified that Ondua has dual citizenship.
The game in question ended 1-0 in favor of the Swiss team.
