FIFA decision made public regarding Cameroonian who showed the Russian flag at the World Cup

Cameroon midfielder Gael Ondua, who wore boots with the Russian flag at the World Cup in Qatar, will escape punishment, FIFA spokesman Giovanni Marti said.
Born and raised in Russia, Ondua also holds Russian citizenship and played for Russian clubs. He put on boots with the flag of Russia for the match of the first round of the group stage of the World Cup with the team of Switzerland (0:1). After the match, the football player said that the Russian flag on his boots is a sign of respect for the country in which he grew up.
Marty said in a statement that the FIFA Disciplinary Commission is aware of the situation but does not see it as a problem.
“He is from Cameroon and Russia. This is just the flag of his country,” the statement said.
Earlier it was reported that Ondua’s act caused outrage in Norway. The general secretary of the Norwegian Helsinki Committee, Berit Lindeman, said that this situation shows that “FIFA is out of control.” He also accused Ondua of a complete lack of “tact, tone and understanding of the tense situation in which Europe finds itself”, and called his act “a provocation”.
Earlier, FIFA and the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) suspended Russian teams and clubs from participation in international competitions for an indefinite period, and therefore the Russian team was unable to play in the play-offs for the right to participate in the World Cup in Qatar.
