FIFA appoints Saudi woman as football referee for the first time

The International Football Federation (FIFA) has appointed the first woman from Saudi Arabia, 34-year-old Anoud al-Asmari, as an international referee. The decision was made on Thursday, January 5, according to the publication. Arab News.
“I am happy to be the first female referee in the history of Saudi sports to receive international status,” Anoud al-Asmari commented on her appointment.
Since 2021, the Saudi authorities have allocated a significant amount of funds to the development of grassroots football sports, including the creation of the first women’s football league and the school league for girls. In 2019, the country’s Football Federation created a women’s football team. It includes 450 registered players, 49 qualified referees and over 900 coaches.
