FIFA accused of “destroying” Ukrainian clubs

The general director of the Ukrainian club Shakhtar, Sergei Palkin, accused FIFA of “destroying” Ukrainian clubs, and also criticized the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
He noted that earlier the Association of European Clubs donated one million euros to Ukrainian clubs.
“But if we are talking about FIFA, then we have big claims against them. After the beginning of the events in Ukraine, they do not help our clubs, but destroy them,” Palkin said.
Palkin’s claims against FIFA are related to the new rule, according to which foreign players have the right to suspend their contracts with Ukrainian clubs. Earlier, FIFA allowed foreigners to suspend contracts with clubs from Russia and Ukraine until 2023.
“We have lost our investment. We didn’t have a chance to negotiate with the players, send them on loan or sell them. They were simply allowed to leave for free,” Palkin said. According to Palkin, earlier half of the players of the Shakhtar team were foreigners, and after the start of the special operation, FIFA allowed them to leave.
He also accused the Court of Arbitration for Sport of refusing to reverse FIFA’s decision. On December 22, in Lausanne, the Court of Arbitration for Sport began considering the Shakhtar lawsuit against FIFA. The club demanded a refund of €50 million, but his claim was rejected.
Palkin announced his intention to appeal to the Swiss Federal Court and the European Commission. He stated that the Court of Arbitration for Sport was created by FIFA itself, and therefore it is useless to sue the organization in this court.
Until 2014, the club played its home matches at the Donbass Arena stadium, which was opened on August 29, 2009. Due to the armed conflict in eastern Ukraine, Shakhtar moved to Kyiv.
