FIDE supported the idea of celebrating the 225th anniversary of the birth of chess player Alexander Petrov, a native of Opochetsky district. This is reported by the Pskov News Tape with reference to the Pskov Regional Chess Federation.
The anniversary of one of the strongest chess players in the world, who created the Russian chess school in Russia, will be celebrated next year 2024. The holiday will be celebrated in the athlete’s homeland, Opochka. Earlier, in 2019, a monument to Alexander Petrov was unveiled here.
The President of the Pskov Region Chess Federation Dmitry Shakhov agreed on the possibilities of organizing the holiday at a meeting in Moscow, which took place at the Central House of Chess Player named after M. M. Botvinnik.
Let us remember that Alexander Petrov lived in 1799-1867. He stood at the origins of the chess movement in Russia and was considered one of the strongest and outstanding chess players in the world in the early and mid-19th century. His legacy was 90 games.
He became the author of his own game, the “Petrov Defense,” as well as the first chess textbook. In addition, Alexander Petrov created several chess problems, one of them was called “Napoleon’s Flight from Moscow to Paris.”
Subsequently, Alexander Petrov became a professor of mechanical engineering and a statesman in Tsarist Russia, participating in the management of the affairs of the Kingdom of Poland, which was part of the Russian Empire.
