The International Chess Federation (FIDE) has introduced a temporary ban on participation in official women’s tournaments for those who have changed their gender from male to female. This is stated in message on the official website of the federation.

At the same time, transgender women are allowed to participate in open tournaments. All their past titles will remain in effect. In case the gender was changed from female to male, the titles of the female tournaments will be lost.

The rating when changing gender will remain the same. The new rules will come into effect on August 21. They will remain in effect until further notice from the federation.

Professional chess player Yosha Iglesias, a transgender woman from France, criticized the federation’s new policy: “Can anyone tell me what counts as an official FIDE event? Will I be allowed to play in the French Championship in three days? European Club Cup in September?
